It is with great pleasure that we introduce the maiden issue of Saudi Journal of Oral Sciences, a new peer-reviewed professional Journal, to the national, regional and international community of practicing dentists, dental scholars, researchers in oral sciences, oral care administrators and policy makers. The Journal becomes the fifth dental Journal in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Riyadh Colleges of Dentistry and Pharmacy is hugely delighted to be the sponsor of the Journal. The inauguration of the Journal is yet another eloquent evidence of the systematic and verifiable progress that dentistry, dental care, dental education and dental research continue to make in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The dream of introducing another journal in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to publish peer-reviewed high-quality research findings did not happen overnight. Following consultation and discussion on whether or not the new journal should be specialty-specific, it was decided to make the journal a quality type that can and will satisfactorily accommodate research manuscripts from the wide spectrum of oral sciences which by acclaimed definition include bio-dental sciences, clinical dentistry, preventive dentistry, dental materials, dental health promotion, dental and oral health administration and policy making. The compelling need for quality research in dental and oral sciences to improve the needs and care services in this century is very challenging and one way to contribute to meeting the challenge is to publish more quality scientific journals that will serve as outlets for scientific research reporting.

The Research Center of Riyadh Colleges of Dentistry and Pharmacy is charged with the responsibility of editorial management and publication of the Journal in line with one of the stated objectives of the Center which is "Producing scientific and professional peer-reviewed Journal on behalf of the Colleges." Publishing this journal now is moving in the right direction.

This achievement is a milestone and should serve as further encouragement for enhanced research by investigators inside and outside Riyadh Colleges of Dentistry and Pharmacy.

Saudi Journal of Oral Sciences, while appealing to the wider regional and international community for quality manuscripts, expects to serve as an impetus for local and national researchers in all specialties of dentistry and dental care to become even more productive and more involved in publishing. The Journal will certainly find its proper niche in the forest of excellent Journals related to Dentistry that are being published throughout the world today. The significantly increased number of Dental schools in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is another important reason why a Journal like SJOS will be made to serve as a quality, peer-reviewed journal for researchers in all areas of dentistry in the Kingdom.

Going down the memory lane on a personal note, I had the honor of being the foundation Editor-in-Chief of the Saudi Dental Journal for many years. In the maiden Editorial of Vol. 1 No. 1 of the Journal in 1989, I wrote, inter alia, "To further the objective of improving the standards of dentistry in the Kingdom and the Arab World, the Saudi Dental Society hereby introduces the publication of the Saudi Dental Journal".

Since 1989, every aspect of Dentistry in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has undergone significant and positive changes. Over two decades later, I have the privilege again of being the foundation Editor-in-Chief of Saudi Journal of Oral Sciences which will complement the current four dental journals in the Kingdom. I see a bright and promising future for dental and oral sciences research in the Kingdom and the region with the bold expansion taking place in undergraduate and graduate dental education as well as residency training in all the dental specialties. Scientific research never stops and so I can confidently predict that more dental Journals will emerge in the Kingdom to reflect the great strides being accomplished in oral health care in Saudi Arabia.

The Journal is ultimately committed to open-access publishing philosophy but it will achieve this in a measured modified manner. Publishing this Journal would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of the working committee, the Editorial Board and a host of national and international consultants and advisers. With appreciation, I want to thank all of the people involved in making this dream come true.

The services of a reputed international publishing house have been obtained for the production of the Journal, twice a year to start with. An excellent quality of production is therefore assured.

I hope readers will find SJOS to be a valuable, new and additional source of scientific information and inspiration. With your support in submitting quality manuscripts, a dedicated Editorial Board and a proficient publishing company, we can be rest assured that within a relatively short time, SJOS will make a palpable impact nationally and regionally in the dental scientific community.
