Every once in a while, a person, a group of persons, or a religious or nonreligious organization creates or develops a vision for something, usually of benefit to the community or the country at large. More specifically in formal education, creative minds look around and decide to start something new in the hope that the new thing being created most likely would germinate, grow, and succeed. One can go into history to dig out how visionary individuals plunge themselves, “hook, line, and sinker” into establishing private institutions of learning at all levels – primary, secondary, college, and university for the benefit of the society.
The founding of Riyadh Colleges of Dentistry and Pharmacy (RCsDP) in 1994 by men of vision under the leadership of Prof. Abdullah R Al Shammery was based on the belief that health education in a rapidly growing and evolving nation like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia needs not be in the exclusive preserve of the government, that is public educational system. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the exclusive dominance of public schools, literally all schools, was not peculiar. Throughout the world, higher institutions of learning were invariably started by governments or government-influenced religious organizations. Of course everywhere around the world, today, except in a very few countries, private higher institutions are flourishing and in some cases, are even performing better than public institutions in their vision, mission, and goals.
When RCDsP started, it did so essentially with two colleges – dentistry and pharmacy comprising the units of dentistry, pharmacy, dental laboratory technology, nursing, and laboratory allied medical sciences. The quality level of dedication, commitment, financing, regional exposure via conferences, student intake, and administration was intense and palpable. The men of vision who started the project were committed to success and actualization of impacting the health of the nation. Of course, all these activities were not without their downside, but the men of vision persevered and never gave up.
It was little wonder and not surprising at all that in January 2018, the erstwhile RCsDP legally under the auspices and regulations of appropriate government ministries and agencies became Riyadh Elm University with permission to have seven colleges in stages – dentistry, pharmacy, medicine, nursing, allied medical sciences, business administration, and computer sciences. This was a huge elevation and we must salute the men of vision whose unalloyed efforts made this happen after 14 years of the founding of the nascent RCsDP.
We congratulate and salute the principal officers of the university – the president and chairman of the board of trustees, the rector, vice rector, the deans, and the chairmen of the departments. We also salute the energetic administrative nonacademic staff, the human resources department, the hospital and clinic staff, the technical staff, the security staff, and the cleaners.
The efforts of all of us led to the glorious emergence of Riyadh Elm University which the community should be immensely proud of.
Indeed, the successful story of “Salute to Vision” is now a reality in Riyadh Elm University.
